Our Story

The Story Behind Artificial Deep: A Game Industry Veteran’s Vision for AI in Development

It was the mid-90s, and the internet was just beginning to take shape. I was studying and teaching myself HTML, witnessing the dawn of the 'new media' era when terms like ‘web designer’ didn’t even exist yet. That wave of technology created new jobs, new possibilities, and a shift in how we thought about content creation. Fast forward nearly three decades, and I’m feeling that same excitement again, this time in the world of AI and game development.

I’ve spent over a decade in game production, coming into the industry later than most but fortunate enough to work on both AAA titles, like Assassin’s Creed, and with independent studios looking to scale. I’ve seen first-hand how the largest teams with well-established pipelines operate and how small and mid-sized studios struggle to make the leap from co-development to creating their own IPs. A year ago, I started experimenting with large language models and generative AI, and what I saw was transformative. Ideation was faster, iteration cycles were shorter, fewer people were needed to get pre-visualization, lore, and procedural world generation off the ground. The efficiency gains were undeniable.

But it wasn’t just about speed. The pace of AI development was accelerating at a level I hadn’t seen since the early internet days. Six months of progress in AI felt like years in traditional game development cycles. LLMs, generative AI, and AI agents were not only improving but becoming indispensable tools for any studio looking to stay competitive. Yet, while the technology was advancing rapidly, the industry itself was facing a different kind of upheaval. The long cycles of growth had given way to consolidation, with major players like Tencent, Sony, and Microsoft absorbing studios.

Layoffs and closures sent shockwaves through the ecosystem. But where some saw uncertainty, I saw opportunity, especially for smaller teams.

That’s why I founded Artificial Deep. We’re at a critical nexus: layoffs are shaking the industry, new studios are emerging, and AI workflows are enabling smaller teams to do more with less. This isn’t about replacing human creativity; it’s about removing the barriers that have made game development increasingly expensive and inaccessible. With the right AI tools, indie studios can punch above their weight, reduce reliance on massive outsourcing, and focus on what really matters—the fun, the creativity, and the vision behind their games.

Of course, the road ahead isn’t without its challenges. Ethical considerations, compliance, and legal frameworks are still evolving. Like any technological revolution, AI will disrupt traditional roles, and those who adapt will thrive while those who resist may struggle. The key is to be ahead of it, to shape its use rather than being shaped by it. That’s where Artificial Deep comes in. Our mission isn’t just to provide AI consulting, it’s to start conversations, to empower indie teams, and to make sure they can leverage AI in a way that strengthens their creative vision rather than diluting it.

We’re not quite at the point of AI-made games or the mythical ‘one-person studio,’ but we are entering an era where smaller teams, aided by AI, can deliver the kind of quality that once required teams of hundreds. There’s still a lot of noise and apprehension around AI, and now is the time to have open, honest discussions about how we use it responsibly. That’s what Artificial Deep is here for, to help studios navigate this shift, embrace the tools available, and take control of their future in game development.
